Living as an Educator

Any teacher who lives in a High Stakes Testing State knows the beast that is Saturday School.  Each Friday night, before I am called to this event I am filled with dread.  Is it apprehension due to lack of preparation? NO, just the unknown.  Will the kids carefully invited attend?  If they attend, will they be "present"?  These are all the things that go through our minds as we either stay up late to prepare or go out and try to forget it will happen.  Today, I was pleasantly surprised when my students arrived.  Of the 13 invited, 11 appeared with bright and shiny faces eager to learn.  Well, that's not true---at least they had shiny faces.  These kids were a little apprehensive at the beginning but once we really began to delve into the material, they surprised me and at the end of it all I emerged into the sunlight pleased with myself and their progress.  Now, will they make these connections and continue to retain the information next week, next month?  I don't know.  I do know that TODAY they actually "got it".  Had their "aha" moments...well maybe they had "oh yeah" moments but they were moments nonetheless.  Time will tell and so will I.  Until next Saturday.  Fingers crossed!
